Realtime Blacklists Facts
RBL Servers are databases in the Internet which contain lists of IP-addresses of Mailservers that potentionally send spam or other unwanted E-Mails.
The query to those databases typically occurs with DNS, similar to a reverse lookup of an IP-address.
The system who wants to query the RBL-database needs a domain name where to query for the IP-address of a connecting other mailserver.
The system adds the IP-address to the domain name backwards like 1.123.168.192.relays.ordb.org.
When the blacklistserver has the IP-address in his database he will return a 127.0.0.2 which means the address is blacklisted.
Queries to RBL-Servers are generally free of charge, but for better performance it is recommended to have your own full copy of the RBL-DNS Zone you want to use.
For this secondary DNS service the RBL providers usually charge money.
